An Artful Carnival Tour

This year, to kick-off the start of the “Coolest Celebration on Earth,” 13 Saint Paul restaurants will help promote the Winter Carnival by participating in, “An Artful Carnival Tour.” The tour will follow a sculpture through various bars and restaurants throughout Saint Paul. The centerpiece for the tour is a steel sculpture made by Rabi. The sculpture, “Queen of the Snows,” is 31” tall with a 6” diameter base. Rabi’s sculpture will travel to a different location each weekday, from January 7 – 25.

As the sculpture travels around the city, each location will be offering various specials to those who mention “Winter Carnival.” The sculpture will be auctioned off on the Winter Carnival website following the promotion.

He is exhibiting “Kassena Collection,” a new series of bas relief metal wall art which combines two art traditions from his native country, Burkina Faso. He also has new bronze sculptures he created while in Burkina in December 2009, and new steel pieces.

The Frank Stone Gallery is located at 1224 2nd St NE in Minneapolis. The gallery will be open today from 12-9pm, with the opening reception starting at 5pm. Local singer Chastity Brown will perform solo around 7:30pm.

Solo Show by Rabi Sanfo

Minneapolis, MN, 4/10/10 – Please join metal sculptor Rabi Sanfo April 22-May 2 at the Frank Stone Gallery. Sanfo will exhibit “Kassena Collection,” a new series of bas relief metal wall art which combines two art traditions from his native country, Burkina Faso.

In early 2009, Sanfo first created a lion hunting shield by wrapping copper, brass and steel sheets around carved wood. This wrapping technique is based on the traditional method of shield and throne making of wrapping leather and tin around wood. He then began to create wall art by combining the wrapping technique with the Kassena style. Kassena women in southern Burkina Faso make architecturally organic and geometric murals on their mud houses. “This collection is my way of translating in a more modern way the richness of my culture,” Sanfo said.

Sanfo returned to Burkina Faso in December 2009 to learn additional lost wax bronze casting techniques. Sanfo said, “My newest sculptures are taller and more expressive in their poses and positions. This is an evolution in my work.” These bronze sculptures and others made in steel will also be in the show.

The Frank Stone Gallery is located at 1224 2nd St NE in Minneapolis. Gallery hours are Thursdays through Sundays, 12-5pm. The opening reception is Friday, April 23 from 5-9pm featuring a live solo performance by local singer Chastity Brown.

About Rabi Sanfo Rabi Sanfo, a Burkina Faso native, immigrated to Minneapolis in 2004. Since then, he has put his welding background to use by creating metal sculptures. Although his artistic techniques have evolved over the years, the core theme of his work remains: to share the history and culture of his native Burkina Faso. Sanfo has received numerous awards at juried exhibits and art festivals. He also supports local organizations by donating many pieces a year for fundraising events. Sanfo lives and works in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.

Rabi is exhibiting his modern African art for the first time outside of the US and for the first time in his native Burkina Faso. His sculptures feature found objects, brass, copper and steel.

Join Rabi for an exhibit of 6 artists, including his twin brother Raogo who creates mixed media pieces and their cousin, painter Harouna Ouédraogo. Harouna is the president and founding member of Hangar 11, a collective art workshop.

Award of Excellence

Rabi received the Award of Excellence - Metal at the 55th Annual Art Fair on the Square in Lake Forest, IL this last weekend. The Art Fair on the Square is the Deer Path Art League’s signature event. This year 180 artists were selected to participate.

He also sold his award winning "Chronicles of a Warrior" to a really nice couple. We were a bit sad to see it go so quickly but know it's going to a great home.

A great couple from Argentina were our neighbors at the fair: Marisa and Daniel. We ended up getting a trio of Marisa's work. Check out her other paintings and if you're interested, we actually do have a few that we're trying to sell for her.

Ant Finds a Home

Rabi donated the Industrious Cooperative Ant, a sculpture he made for the MN DNR which was on display at the 2008 MN State Fair, to South St. Paul. It blends in pretty well at the Wildflower Levee Park. Check out the article about the donation. Rabi was officially thanked by the city at their city council meeting on July 20th.

1st Place at 9th Annual Art of Recycling

Rabi was awarded First Place at the 9th Annual American Iron Metal Sculpture Competition, which is part of the 2009 Minneapolis Aquatennial celebration, for his piece "Chronicles of a Warrior." This is first year American Iron has not had 2 categories (large and small sculptures) but rather judged all sizes together.

With this sculpture, Rabi put his late father's stories into a visual form. Emilie Sanfo wrote many fable and stories, but did not complete this epic. Rabi's twin brother Raogo completed the tale of the warrior, and Rabi translated it into English for the competition to accompany the sculpture.

The piece will be on public display Tuesday and Wednesday, July 21st and 22nd, on Nicollet Mall in front of the IDS Crystal Court (717 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis). Please stop by the IDS Crystal Court from 10am-6pm if you get a chance.

We'll still use this blog every now and then to update you on our thoughts and exciting news. But we wanted to move towards a site with a more useful portfolio. We still have a bunch of photos to upload so come back often to see the updates! We'll also accept online sales pretty soon via PayPal.

Thanks to a referral, I am currently building our website but I need some feedback. So let me know what you think! Our trial period ends in 2 weeks. It's a pretty easy platform to work with and I can make any changes anytime I want without having to go through a web designer. There are some things that I don't love about it, but I think it's the best I've seen for the budget that we have.

Have you seen this spider around?

Yesterday, Rabi found this ransom note attached to a can of Raid: Wasp & Hornet Killer.

Although he abided by the directions yesterday, we still don't have the spider back on the wall of the Q.arma Building. Rabi stopped at the Diamonds Coffee Shoppe after noon today and saw that the ransom money was still taped to the trashcan lid. The folks at Diamonds didn't know why they were the drop spot.

Give us a buzz if you see the spider around. Obviously we're hoping the Wasp & Hornet Killer doesn't work on spiders and that this prank ends well with the safe return of the sculpture.

Spiritual Art Show 2009

Stop by the Kolbe Center to view this year's Spiritual Art Show. The Northeast Minneapolis Juried Spiritual Art Show started 9 years ago, and has grown to where over 1,000 visitors attend its five day run. In 2008 those visitors saw over 70 unique works of art. Rabi tied for 1st place in 2007 and is excited to participate again this year.

On Thursday, April 2, there will be the Spiritual Art Festival with music by Singleton Street Bluegrass Band at 7-8:30pm.

Thanks to all of you who showed up at the opening reception of L'age du Fer! We had an awesome turn out despite the early rain and had a lot of fun.

A big thank you too to my family who came from Wisconsin (with cheese in hand!) and Illinois. My mom and dad have been incredibily supportive of us through it all. My dad even labored hard to provide the base for "Le Prince du Ciel."

Thanks too to Until the End who played a great set for everyone. Their music really added to the ambiance of the night.

And finally, thanks to Laura at the gallery and of course Lynn and Frank for the opportunity to show at their space.

I am excited to announce that RPCV author Alice R O'Grady will be reading from Ashanti Saga: The Fort at the Closing Reception March 27. This is an amazing opportunity for us since Rabi studied in Ghana and I am a RPCV from Burkina Faso.

About O'Grady
A member of Ghana 1, the first U.S. Peace Corps group to go to work anywhere in the world, O'Grady taught science and biology in a secondary school in Ghana. She then served as Deputy Director of the Peace Corps in Western Nigeria, and returned to Ghana to teach at Accra Academy seconday school on contract with the Ghana government. She is a staff writer in the summer for the Chautauquan Daily newspaper at Chautauqua Institution, New York.

About Ashanti Saga
Set in 1900 West Africa, it’s the first of a projected series of five books that takes the reader through the twentieth century with an African family.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Burkinabé artist Rabi Sanfo immigrated to Minneapolis in 2004. Starting his business Yarbi Design first in his garage, Sanfo put his welding background into use by creating metal furniture. Since then, he expanded his work to include metal sculptures, and in 2007 relocated to the Q.arma Building in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. Although his artistic techniques have evolved over the years, the core theme of his work remains: to share the history and culture of his native Burkina Faso.

Arstist Statement
My art is contemporary African art inspired by my country, Burkina Faso, and Africa in general. Through my art, I want to share the rich and impressive history and culture of West Africa. The shapes of my sculptures, furniture and decorative objects are inspired by words, stories, fables and situations that come into my mind, and my culture. By the magic of bending, grinding and welding, I try to give these inspirations a form, an expression and a touch of life so when I get lost in a deep contemplation, I feel like they are living.

This exhibition of 3-dimensional art fills the galleries at The Phipps Center for the Arts. Sculptures in the show range in size from small tabletop pieces to large, free-standing constructions, to comprehensive installations. Various media are represented including bronze, stone, fabricated metal, ceramic, glass, and wood.

Wayne Potratz, professor, and Guy Baldwin, professor emeritus, both from the art department of the University of Minnesota, are jurors for the exhibition and will present awards for the top sculptures at the opening reception.

The Society of Minnesota Sculptors was founded in 1943 by a group of prominent art educators in Minneapolis. Since then it has grown to over 75 members throughout the state. The society's mission is to encourage and help member sculptors do their best work, achieve recognition, and feel gratification from what they create.

The Great MN Get-Together (ie MN State Fair) is starting soon. I can't give you a sneak peak of the sculpture yet (I haven't even seen the final product), but here's the text for the artist's interpretive panel:

Commissioned by Minnesota DNR as a tribute to 75,000 volunteers who have removed over five million pounds of rubbish from Minnesota’s public waters since 1989.

Sculptor Rabi Sanfo has combined artistic talent with technical and engineering skills, and has received high praise at recent sculpture contests. He has participated in exhibitions around Minnesota as well as Chicago, Illinois. One of his pieces has even found its way to India. As Rabi has described his work, “By the magic of bending, grinding and welding, I try to give inspirations a form, an expression and a touch of life so when I get lost in deep contemplation, I feel like they are living.” Rabi has described this year’s sculpture as follows:

“During the Great Mississippi Riverboat Cleanup (June 12, 2008), many people cleaned the river as a community. Cleaning the Mississippi riverbank in Lilydale, near downtown Saint Paul, my group removed a rusting, half-buried wheelbarrow. It reminded me of an ant’s head. Underneath the piece there were ants. At this point, I knew I would be creating an ant for my sculpture. I chose every piece after I found the wheelbarrow to help build the ant, including a gas cylinder and a steel pot. Ants live in community and build everything in this community in an organized way. If people did the same, the environment would be better.”

“When these pieces are garbage along the river, people don’t’ like them. Once you put them together and create something, people like them. In my home country of Burkina Faso (West Africa), people do not throw things away. They always try to find a way to repair items or they transform them into other useable objects. They reuse everything, down to nails and screws. This has inspired me to do found-object art here in the United States, combined with my metal sculptures. When I create found object art, I talk to the parts and tell them that I am giving them a new life, a life where people are going to like them, instead of having them sit somewhere in a landfill or on a riverbank.”

The materials for this work, except for the supporting structure, have been gathered from rubbish removed both in the riverboat cleanup and a large flood plain cleanup in Belle Plaine, along the Minnesota River (southwest of the metro area).

Rabi was awarded Second Place and Scrappy's Choice in the Small Sculpture Category at the 8th Annual American Iron Metal Sculpture Competition, which is part of the 2008 Minneapolis Aquatennial celebration.

As part of the competition, all artists have 1 hour to select their materials from the grounds of American Iron.

The sculpture will be on public display Tuesday and Wednesday, July 22nd and 23rd, on Nicollet Mall in front of the IDS Crystal Court (717 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis). All entries will eventually be posted on the American Iron site.

Adopt-a-River Sculpture

Although not officially confirmed, it looks like the Adopt-a-River program will commission Rabi to create an outdoor sculpture to be displayed at the MN State Fair this year. This is the 15th year that a sculpture will be located at the DNR's State Fair Building.

Rabi will therefore be participating in the 17th Annual Great Mississippi Riverboat Cleanup. It is during this cleanup that he will select the materials for this sculpture.

Rabi and his twin brother Philippe participated in a bronze training during our recent visit to Ouaga. Their schoolmates Hamidou and Harouna are bronziers at the Village Artisanal de Ouagadougou. With Hamidou and Harouna's patience and guidance, they learned the lost-wax casting process.

"You of Little Faith" travelled across the pond last month, thanks to the generosity of Nick and Rosie. It will stay on display chez Sanfo, meaning it was a gift for Rabi's mom back in Burkina Faso.

Honoring Black History Month the Soap Factory presents the largest group exhibition on Black Culture by Minnesota artists of color.

The title was inspired by author and activist Eldridge Cleaver, from his book “Soul on Ice”, reflecting on the turbulent times of the civil rights movement from which he built a culture consciousness which is still active in our lives today.

Soul on Ice will be a rare opportunity to view an exhibition of over sixty Minnesota artists of color, an exciting and chilling art experience. The Soul on Ice exhibition will literally be a chilling new art experience, as the Soap Factory Gallery will not be heated during the run of the show. Visitors and attendees will need to bundle up wearing winter gear while viewing Stone Cold Art.

Soul On Ice is curated by Pat Phillips and the TAWU (The Art Within Us) artist group sponsored by Obsidian Arts. TAWU artists regularly develop and participate in group and individual exhibits, art-history based educational programs and events.
